Charles Scruggs Hayes was born to Mary Olive Bullington and Charles Casel Hayes. He was the husband of Ruby Marie Lovett Hayes. He was a World War II veteran having served his country as Sergeant for the United States Army.

BOONEVILLE - Charles Scruggs Hayes, 83 of Booneville, died Saturday, December 7, 1996 in an area hospital. He served as a member of an elite U.S. and Canadian force known as the "Black Devils" during World War II. He received many commendations and awards for his service including the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star for brave and meritorious achievement in ground combat and the Silver Star in lieu of five Bronze Stars.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. at the National Cemetery under the direction of Roberts Funeral Home in Booneville.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby, a son Charles of Booneville, three daughters Giovanna Airheart of Halletsville, Texas, Amorette Word of Stuttgart, and Moriah Hayes of Booneville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ken Airheart, Billy Word, Brian Robertson, Randy and Bryan Samo and Richard Myers.
