A son of Adelphia Coburn & Patience Simons MASON, Reuben married Lucebe L. Stacy on 25 March 1858. They settled on the Nicholas Coburn Farm. During the Civil War, Reuben, at age 27, volunteered for 3 years, and served in Companies D & F of the 63rd Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. He was transferred to the 55th Regiment, Company D, United States Colored Infantry, and was made Captain in the field. Captured & imprisoned at Andersonville, he helped clean the camp before his exchange. He was in Washington, awaiting discharge, when President Lincoln was assasinated. Reuben was selected to command an honor guard escorting the President's body to it's final resting place. With the rank of 1st Lieutenant, he was discharged at Baton Rouge, LA on 31 Dec. 1865. Reuben & Lucebe had 5 children: Ida, Arthur, Zora, William, & Hulda. A Grand Army Of The Republic 1861-1865 marker is placed next to his monument.
