Czech puppet maker, illustrator, motion picture animator and film director. He is best known, however, for his work in animation with puppets. Born in Pilsen belonging to a middle class family, he introduced himself in the world of puppets in 1936 but it wasn't until 1945 that he began the field he would be best known for: animation with them. From then on Trnka continued to direct movies until 1965 when he retired, also writing himself the scripts. Among his films are the following shorts: "Zvirátka to petrovstí" (1946, cartoons), Román s basou" (1949), "Dva mrazíci (1953, shadow puppets), Proc UNESCO?" (1958), "Vasen" (1962), "Kybernetická babicka" (1962), "Gabriel Archandel Pani Husa" (1964), and "Ruka" (1965), as well as six features: "Spalícek" (1947), "Cisaruv slavik" (1949), "Bajaj" (1950), "Staré Ceske povesti" (1953), "Vojak Dobrý Svejk" (1955), and "Sen noci svatojanske" (1959). Victim of a heart condition, he died in Prague at the age of only 57, and his funeral was a large event. Trnka was nicknamed "The Walt Disney of Eastern Europe", though their styles are very different.
