James Read Chadwick was an American gynecologist and medical librarian remembered for describing the Chadwick sign of early pregnancy in 1887.

James Chadwick was the son of Christoper C., a Boston merchant, and Louisa (Read) Chadwick. He married Catharine Maria Lyman in Boston on May 11, 1871. Maria was the daughter of Dr. George H. Lyman. They had three daughters; Nora, Margaret and Elizabeth; and a son, Elbridge Gerry Chadwick.

James Read Chadwick qualified with an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1871, and worked as a gynecologist in Boston. From 1871 to 1873 he studied obstetrics in Europe. From 1874 he worked at the Boston City Hospital, helping to found the gynecological department, and taught at Harvard Medical School. He helped to found, and became secretary and president of the American Gynecological Society. He was a founder of the Boston Medical Library Association in 1875, and worked as the librarian until his death. He was voted president of the Association of Medical Librarians in 1904. He was the first president of the Harvard Medical Alumni Association in 1891. He was a supporter of women in the practice of medicine, writing a report which cited the contributions of women in medicine.

He died suddenly in 1905 at his summer home in New Hampshire, probably as a result of a fall from a piazza roof.

Additional information about son, Elbridge Gerry Chadwick: He was born in Boston on Sept. 11, 1881. On Feb. 19, 1916, in Boston, Gerry was a groomsman at the wedding of Monroe Douglas Robinson and Dorothy May Jordan. Monroe was the nephew of President Teddy Roosevelt and Dorothy was the daughter of Eben Dyer Jordan, founder of Jordan Marsh Company of Boston. This marriage ended in divorce after about 6 years. About 1926 Gerry married as his first wife, Dorothy May Jordan Robinson. They had a summer home in Oyster Bay, Long Island.
