Son of the late Willie Cal Manning and the late Rosie Lee Allen Manning, he was a native of Cherokee County. He was a member of Mikes Creek Missionary Baptist Church and a retired employee of the South Carolina Highway Department.
In addition to his wife, he is survived three daughters, Rose-Maria Manning Tate (Reggie), Georgia A. Manning and Martha L. Manning, all of Gaffney; three sons, Willie James Manning, David Jr. Manning and Richard C. Manning, all of Gaffney; his step-son, Brian Leach of Gaffney; five brothers, James C. Manning of Columbia, John A. Manning of McCormick, Richard K. Manning and Howard E. Manning (Jewel), both of Greenville and Horace Thompson of Mooresburg, S.C.; five sisters, Rosia Mae Manning, Gerldine Logan, Bessie Manning (Townsend Jr.), Sarah Manning and Nannie Manning, all of Gaffney; 26 grandchildren, two of whom were reared in the home as his children, Whitney Manning and Ricky Manning, both of Gaffney; nine uncles, Gary Manning (Inez) James Aiken, Rev. Warren Manning (Valaire), Wash-Jean Wilkins, Alfreda Wilkins (Josephine), Rev. Samuel Leach (Elaine), Claude Wilson, Bobby Leach (Elousie) and Fletcher Leach, all of Gaffney; six aunts, Estell Allen, Mariann Battle, Ruth Aiken, Vergie Ray (Dea. Windell), Doris Manning and Flordy Spears, all of Gaffney; his motherin law, Roberta Leach of Gaffney; four sisters-inlaw, Lizzie Rainey (Steve), Mary Ann Posey (Ronnie), Sarah Leach (Robert) and Kathy Shippy, all of Gaffney; three brothers in-law, Billy Joe Leach (Kat), Herman Leach and Tyrone Wilson (Angel), all of Gaffney; a special friend, Charles Wilson; and host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. at Mikes Creek Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Courtney Mills, Rev. Samuel Leach and Rev. C. A. Wallace officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. He will lie instate from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service .
