On 5 Jul 1923, Walter married Marie Katheryn McNulty. They had three children: Arthur Daggett, Marion Patricia, and Walter Ernest.

At the time he became ill , he was the heard master at Colorado State University (formerly Colorado A & M). He died from skin cancer that got into his eye. His death notice appeared 31 March 1958.
