US Congressman. He was attending Bloomfield Academy Virginia, when the Civil War started and he enlisted in the Confederate Army. He served as a Private in Company F, 39th Regiment, Virginia Volunteer Infantry and was with a battery of the Stuart Horse Artillery, when the Army of Northern Virginia, surrendered in April 1865. After the war, he graduated from the law department of the University of Virginia in 1867, was admitted to the bar in 1868, commenced to practice law in Accomac, Virginia and was elected prosecuting attorney for Accomac County in 1873. In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth and Fifty-first Congresses, serving until 1891. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 48.
