Civil War Union Army Officer. On September 28, 1861 he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Tennessee (USA) Volunteer Infantry. He resigned on March 14, 1862 because of poor health, but in July of 1862 he was commissioned as a Captain, US Volunteers and was mustered in as an Assistant Adjutant General in the United States Army's Adjutant General Department. He once again resigned because of health reasons on December 28, 1863. From 1865-1870, he served as Chancellor for the Chattanooga Chancery Division. He practiced law until 1878 when he became Judge for the Chattanooga Circuit. He was re-elected and served until his death.
