French Political Figure. A veteran of World War I, he served as Secretary General of the French Communist Party from 1950 to 1953. He was elected to the French National Assembly, where his influence as the leading Communist in France led him to run for President in the 1969 election, where he received 21% of the vote, the highest for a Communist Party candidate before or since.
