Claude grew up on the farm where he was born. He farmed with his father until he was twenty-seven. Then he worked for the Green Springs Co-operative Elevator Company and was foreman at the Green Creek elevator for two years. In 1942 he became a locomotive fireman on the old Nickel Plate Railroad. In 1948 he was promoted to engineer. In 1964, the Nickel Plate Railroad merged with the Norfolk and Western Railroad and Claude went to work for them.
On July 20, 1935 in Green Springs, at the Evangelical parsonage, Claude married Evelyn Ione Willis. Claude and Evelyn belonged to the Seybert United Methodist Church. Claude was a 32nd Degree Mason. Claude and Evelyn had children: Yvonne Mae and Janet Kay.
