Max was working as a civilian employee at the Pentagon who dealt with veteran issues on September 11, 2001. He was a retired United States Army Master Sergeant, serving from November 1, 1954 to November 1, 1974. He was officially the last American combat soldier to leave Vietnam in 1973.

He is buried in Section 64, Site 4639 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

His name can also be found on the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
