Mary Alice Carter married Daniel McPhail in Franklin, Tennessee on December 1, 1853. They moved to Texas and became the parents of Orlando (1853-1932), Alice Adelaide (1856-1933), Marcus (1857-1932), Fannie (1859-1863), and John Angus (1866- ca. 1960). Daniel McPhail enlisted in Terry's Texas Rangers. Mary Alice's father, Fountain Branch Carter, insisted that she and the children return to Franklin, Tenn. for safety during the war. Unfortunately, he could not have forseen that the Battle of Franklin would be fought on his property on Nov. 30, 1864, and his daughter Mary and her children were among the rest of the family and neighbors who sought shelter in the basement of the Carter House.

After the war, Daniel McPhail returned to Tennessee. Sadly, Mary Alice died in 1869 at the age of 34. She was buried in the Carter family plot in the Old City Cemetery in Franklin. In 1870 the McPhails were still in Tennessee, according to the census, but they returned to Texas sometime afterward. Apparently Mr. McPhail did not remarry. He died March 6, 1902 and is buried in Ennis, Texas.
