Alice L. "Petie" Furry, 88, formerly of Roaring Spring, died Monday at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home after an extended illness.
She was born in Roaring Spring, daughter of the late William H. and Margaret (Imler) Smith. She married Ray E. Furry on Oct. 10, 1943, in Roaring Spring, and he died Aug. 16, 1988.
Surviving are a son, Timothy W. Sr. and companion, Jeani Miller, of Sinking Valley; two grandchildren: Timothy W. Furry Jr. and wife, Sandy, of Roaring Spring and Carie Jo Blazer and friend, Greg Maxwell, of Altoona; two great-granddaughters: Kay Lee Furry and Kandice Blazer; a great-great-granddaughter, McKenzie Dawn Morrow; a sister-in-law, Grace Smith of Roaring Spring; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by six sisters and two brothers,
a daughter-in-law, Janice I. (Hartman) Furry, formerly of Roaring Spring, on Oct. 16, 1987. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Alice was a 1943 graduate of Roaring Spring High School, where she was a member of the 1940 girls' basketball team. She served as a medical technician in the Women's Army Corps during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1945. She received the WWII Victory Medal and the American Defense Service Medal. She retired from the Roaring Spring Blank Book Co. with more than 30 years of service.
Alice was a life member of Roaring Spring Bare Memorial Church of God and also belonged to the Roaring Spring Lioness Club, American Legion Auxiliary and American Red Cross. She enjoyed being with family and friends and traveling. She also enjoyed going to Best Way Pizza in McKee and Turkey Hill in Roaring Spring with her sister-in-law, Grace Smith.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery (www.thegoodfuneralhomeinc.com), where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, Pastor T.M. Talbot Moses officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home Nursing Agency Hospice or the charity of your choice.
