Anna was actually born in Allegheny City, which was an independent city situated on the north side of the Allegheny River prior to it being incorporated into the larger city of Pittsburgh in 1907. She was one of fifteen children (seven of whom died young) born to John and Mary SKLAR, who had immigrated from Czechoslovakia (today's eastern Slovakia) in the mid to late 1880s. Following about 20 years in the Pittsburgh area, the family moved north to Butler County, Pennsylvania.

Although they lived just outside of the city of Butler, in the small company town of Lyndora, Anna and Walter WENDELL were married in a civil ceremony in Conneaut, Ashtabula County, Ohio where the first of their six children--that included two sets of twins--was born. Shortly thereafter, the young family returned to Lyndora where their other children were born prior to moving to Michigan in the early 1920s. Sadly, Anna died of pulmonary TB within a year of the family's move to Detroit, leaving their children to be raised in the home of their paternal Wendell relatives.

Anna's three surviving children--Dorothy, Clinton & Edgar--were young when she died at age 29, so had little they remembered about their mother. From a large family herself, Anna's grandchildren numbered only five. The only girl was given the middle name of her maternal grandmother.
