After the explosion of an enemy shell in the "Q" gunhouse, Major Harvey was mortally wounded and with great presence of mind, he ordered the magazine to be flooded, thereby saving the ship. He died shortly afterwards. For great devotion to duty, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross Medal presented to his widow by King George V, at Buckingham Palace on November 29, 1916.
