MAJ Francis John William Harvey

World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Major in the Marine Light Infantry. On May 31, 1916, at the Battle of Jutland in the North Sea, Major Harvey was on board the HMS Lion. After the explosion of an enemy shell in the "Q" gunhouse, Major Harvey was mortally wounded and with great presence of mind, he ordered the magazine to be flooded, thereby saving the ship. He died shortly afterwards. For great devotion to duty, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross Medal presented to his widow by King George V, at Buckingham Palace on November 29, 1916.
