Charles A. Spence, age 80, well known merchant of LaFayette, died at Chambers County Hospital on Friday, September 1, at 7:00 p.m. after a long illness.
Mr. Spence was born in Chambers County January 13, 1892. He was a member of the LaFayette First Baptist Church where he served for many years as secretary of the Intermediate Department, Masonic Lodge No. 74, Alcazar Temple, Rotary Club of LaFayette with a perfect attendance for 23 years and American Legion. He was a former member of the LaFayette City Council and a former member of the Alabama House of Representatives.
Survivors include two sons, C. A. Spence, Jr. of LaFayette and James Spence, Kokomo, Indiana; a daughter, Rebekah Stansell, Manchester, Georgia; two granddaughters, Kayron Spence, LaFayette, and Susan Stansell of Manchester; two brothers, W. D. Spence of Lakewood, New Jersey and J. T. Spence, Greensboro, North Carolina; a sister, Miss Rosa Spence, Buffalo.
Funeral services were held at LaFayette First Baptist Church on Sunday, September 3, at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Mel Deason and Rev. Sammy Stabler officiating. Interment was in the LaFayette Cemetery with Johnson & Sanders in charge.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the LaFayette Rotary Club.
Pallbearers were Gene Fuller, Ed Allen, Walter Lowe, Glenn McClendon, Randolph Bowling and Bill Sharman.
