Elza most likely lived and died all of his adult life in Grand Island, Hall Co., NE. He worked for the railroad and never married.
The surname on his tombstone is mispelled. It is spelled as "Wheller". It should be "Wheeler". This stone, as well as those for his Elza's mother (Nancy), his half-sister (Mary Nunn), and niece (Jennie Black) are all the same size/style. They may have all been put up/paid for by Margaret Williams and her husband at the same time as for Margaret's mother, Mary Nunn. Nancy's death certificate informant was Margaret's husband, Charles. He probably arranged for the gravestones. As an inlaw he may not have known the correct surname spellings. The same mispelling is found on Nancy's gravestone.
The 1926 birthyear is taken from the burial listings of Elmwood Cemetery in St.Paul, Nebraska. The listing name is "Eliza" Wheeler, but is immediately next to Nancy Wheeler, his mother. The Elza/Eliza mix-up occurred more than once. The birth year on the cemetery listiing (1866) is different from the 1865 actual birth year. It could be a simple mistake by the stonecarver since similar errors are on Nancy's tombstone (1950 for the actual birthyear of 1845) (1829 for the death certificate year of 1927).
Elza probably never married nor had any children. His father, Hardin Wheeler, died when Elza was about six years old. His mother remarried shortly after in 1872. He and his older sister, Sarah, were raised with six younger half-siblings in Gibson County, Indiana. Elza moved to Merrick County, Nebraska, sometime between 1875 and 1888. His sister and grandmother had already made the move, and his mother came out shortly thereafter.
