Sgt. Valles is the second U.S. servicewoman to die in Iraq. She was stationed out of Fort Carson in Colorado and is Fort Carson's 12th fatality and the only woman.
Sgt. Valles was with the headquarters detachment of 64th Forward Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. She also had just reinlisted for another 2 years and had recently made Sgt. last year.
She is from Eagle Pass, TX. She gradutated from Eagle Pass High School, with honors, in 1995.
Surviving Sgt. Valles are her mother, Maribel Valles, step-father, Carlos Gomez, sister, Maribel, brothers, Fernando and Jesus, and many other relatives who will miss her terribly.
Sgt. Valles died of non-combat injuries (a gunshot wound in the abdomen) received approximately 55 miles north of Baghdad in a town called Balad.
