On October 16, 1940 Alvin registered for the first peace time military draft in US history. He was employed as a Teacher at the Buckley School in Shelbyville. His registration showed that he was five foot nine inches tall, 170 pounds with blue eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion. Two months later, December 21 he and Miss Allie Rae Sample were married in Shelby County.
Although WW II had ended two months earlier he was inducted on November 19, 1945 and trained at Camp Hood, Texas and Camp Pickett, Virginia. With demobilization Alvin was honorably discharged November 7, 1946.
Alvin passed at his home in Shelbyville at the age of 80, October 12, 1996. Services were held at Mangum Funeral Home and he was buried in the West Hamilton Cemetery, Shelbyville, Shelby County, Texas where Allie joined him in 2013. Day is done, God is nigh.
