Helin McCauley
OBERLIN - Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2005, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic church in Oberlin for Helin McCauley, 83, who died at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2005, in Oberlin after a brief illness. Deacon Dale Deshotel will conduct the funeral service in the absence of Father Michael Barra, pastor of the church.
Visitation was observed at Assembly of God New Beginnings chapel in Oberlin from 4 p.m. until 1 p.m. A short service conducted by his close friend and church pastor Donald Duplechin followed by a rosary at 6 p.m. Visitation continues today at the chapel prior to being moved to St. Joan of Arc Church.
Mr. McCauley was born and reared on a farm in Evangeline Parish. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Altamaha during World War II and participated in numerous battles in the Pacific and Far East. He was discharged in December 1945 as a Petty Officer 1st Class Aviation Mechanic. Returning to civilian life, he became a self-employed farmer and rancher in the Soileau Community of Allen Parish. He was active in several agricultural organizations and served as president of the Allen Parish Farm Bureau, president of the Louisiana Soy Bean Association, president of the Allen Parish Fair Association and the Allen Parish Rodeo Association. He was a founding board member of Southern Producers Co-op. He was one of the first importers of Charolois Cattle into the state of Louisiana and an early commercial grower of wheat and corn in Southwest Louisiana. He was featured in Herbicide television commercials and ad prints in the 1970s and hosted tours for European Agriculturists in New Orleans and South Louisiana on behalf of La. Farm Bureau. Helin also served as a deputy sheriff of Allen Parish and as a self-employed private investigator. His most recent employment was with the Allen Parish Tourist Commission.
He is survived by his wife, the former Louella Fontenot, of Oberlin; daughters, Rebecca and husband, Clarence Vidrine Jr., of Grand Chenier, Monica and husband, Rodney Lapoint, of Reeves; sons, Malcolm McCauley, of
Alexandria, and Cory McCauley and wife, Lisa, of Katy, Texas; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one sister, Elaine M. Gaspard, of St. Martinville; brothers, Harry 'McCauley and Dr. Huey McCauley, of Lafayette.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gentry McCauley; sister, Priscilla M. Vidrine; and his parents, Lanzy and Lula Deshotel McCauley.
Ardoin Funeral Home of Kinder is in charge of arrangements.
