Finis Mitchell Dies Monday

ROCK SPRINGS-- Finis N. Mitchell, 93, of 422 M St., Rock Springs, died at 8:20 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 1995 at Castle Rock Convalescent Center in Green River where he had been a resident since August of 1994.

A longtime resident of Rock Springs, Mitchell had been in ill health the past two years. He was born Nov. 14, 1901 in Ethel, Mo., the son of the late Henry Reece and Faye Troutman Mitchell. He attended schools in Missouri and married the former Emma Nelson in Rock Springs on June 4, 1925.

During the Depression, Mitchell owned and operated a fishing and hunting camp near Boulder. He worked for the Game and Fish Department stocking fish in the nearby rivers and lakes. He served in the Wyoming State Legislature for two terms in 1955 and 1957. Mitchell retired in 1969 as a carman for the Union Pacific Railroad where he worked for many years.

He authored the book "Wind River Trails" and its first publication was in 1975 with the ninth printing beginning in 1993. He was responsible for naming many trails in Wyoming. A peak in the Wind River Mountain range is named Mitchell Peak after him.

In 1977 he was awarded an honorary doctorate of law degree from the University of Wyoming. Mitchell received an award from the Federal Department of Agriculture in 1980 on its 75th anniversary. He received an outstanding achievement award from the Environmental Protection Ageny in 1987 for years of contribution to the Wyoming environment. On Feb. 24, 1989, the State of Wyoming declared the day Finis Mitchell Day. He was a member of the First Congregational Church and a life member of the Rock Springs Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Mitchell of Rock Springs; one son and daughter-in-law, William R. "Bill" and Lynn Mitchell of Pinedale; one daughter and son-in-law, Anna Mae and Thomas Dew of Las Vegas, Nev.; one brother-in-law, Gordan Holcomb of St. Helens, Ore.; three grandchildren, Sandra Dew Snow and husband Dennis of Glendive, Mont., Alvin Mitchell and wife Dawn, and Devin Mitchell and wife Susan, all of Pinedale; three great-grandchildren, Daphne Snow Meyers and husband Mark of Fargo, N.D., Darren Snow of Glendive, and Miranda Mitchell of Pinedale, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mitchell was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis Mitchell, and two sisters, Mary Keahey and Jewel Holcomb.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 1995 at the First Congregational Church. The Rev. Jeanny House will officiate. Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery with Masonic graveside services.

Friends may call at the funeral chapel, 154 Elk St., Rock Springs, Wednesday afternoon and evening until 8 p.m. and Thursday at the church one hour prior to services.
