U.S. Congressman. Attended the Collegiate Institute, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, moved Ottawa, Illinois, in 1835 and commenced the practice of law in 1840. He was Illinois State Attorney for the ninth judicial district (1846-51), member of the Illinois State Senate (1852-60) and a member of the 1861, peace convention to prevent the impending Civil War. In 1865, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving unti he resigned in 1871. He then resumed the practice of law until his death at age 75.
