U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Born in Hallowell, Maine, he graduated from Bowdoin College, in 1815, studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Gardiner, Maine. He was a member Maine State House of Representatives, when elected as a Whig to the Twenty-first Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Peleg Sprague and reelected to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving (1829-41). In 1841, he was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate, serving until 1847. He then resumed the practice of law, was a member of the commission to ascertain claims against Mexico, (1849-50) and served as Attorney General of Maine, (1850, 1854, 1856). He died at age 70 in Portland, Maine.
