U.S. Congressman. Born in Halifax, Massachusetts, during the Revolutionary War, he served in the Continental Army, (1777-80). After the war, he graduated from Harvard University in 1787, studied theology and was ordained to the minister. Relocating to Maine, he was pastor of the Congregational Church in Winslow. He was a member of the Massachusetts Senate in 1810 and Massachusetts House of Representatives, (1811-12). In 1819, he was elected as Republican from Massachusetts to the Sixteenth Congress, serving until 1821. When the State of Maine was separated from Massachusetts and admitted as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress and reelected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, serving (1821-25). After his term, he served in the Maine Senate in 1828 and was a member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1834, until his death at age 72 in Augusta, Maine.
