Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Little is know about his early life. He was named an apostolic legate by Pope Gregory I and sent to Constantinople to settle a religious dispute. Failing in his negotiation role, he was reassigned to Gaul. He was elected pope in 604 and during his papacy would add more clergy and appoint twenty-seven new bishops. Using papal funds to prevent invasion from the Lombards would negatively impact his ability to provide food for starving Romans. This was made worse when he charged the destitute for what food was available. Many in Rome never forgot his decision and it would greatly mar his reputation. When he died of natural causes, his funeral procession was blocked by citizens still angered over his treatment of the poor.
