Born in York County, PA to Alfred Henry Knaub and Mary Coleman Knaub, "Romaine" married Alfred Weaver Riegel of Bernville, Berks County, PA. They moved to Philadelphia a few years later. She operated a small restaurant and a Beauty Salon at different times in her life. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and active in her Episcopalian Church. Romaine adopted a 12 year old Filipino boy, Sam Sarmiento, who "jumped ship" in Philadelphia. Sam remained close with Romaine and raised a family in Philadelphia. Romaine and Alfred only had one child.
