US Congressman. He attended Transylvania University Kentucky, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1809 and commenced to practice in Lancaster, Kentucky. In 1817, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth, Sixteenth, and Seventeenth Congresses and served until his resignation in 1821. He declined an appointment as Governor of Arkansas Territory President Monroe, to serve as a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives, (1822-27). He was Secretary of State of Kentucky in 1828 and was appointed chief justice of the court of appeals of Kentucky, serving (1829-34). After his post as chief justice, he was a professor of law at Transylvania University, a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives, (1848, 1851-52) and justice of the court of appeals for the second district of Kentucky, (1864-71). He died at age 83 in in Lexington, Kentucky.
