U.S. Congressman. With the out break of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army at the age of sixteen and rose to the rank of non-commissioned officer in command of scouts for the 1st Kentucky Confederate Cavalry. After the war, he attended Pleasant Valley Seminary and was principal of Mount Etna Academy, (1867-68). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1868, graduated from the Harvard Law School in 1870 and commenced to practice law in Owensboro, Kentucky. He was Daviess County Attorney, (1870-74). In 1889, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first, Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until 1895. Declining to be a candidate for another term, he returned to his law practice and engaged in literary pursuits until his death at 79.
