William Ivan Gilliland was born in Albany, MO on July 10, 1920 to George and Clara May Gilliland. He also lived in Nebraska, Kansas before moving to Baker, OR around 1937. He was married to Betty Bennett Over on Dec. 16, 1944 in Baker. Ivan joined the Army in 1939 and served with the 2nd Battalion, 15th Infantry in Europe. He was awarded a good conduct medal, infantry medal and the Purple Heart for injuries received in action near Rome. He was survived by his wife (Betty), 2 sons, (William and Kenneth) and 2 daughters (Bonnie and June). He was a logging contractor and was injured when he fell off a logging truck and broke his neck. He was brought to Baker by the fire department ambulance and was placed in traction but died 2 days later.

Funeral service was held Saturday, July 23, 1960 at Beatty Chapel
