Daughter of Abner and Lucy Dunham Thurber. She married Thomas Mason Wheeler in 1844. She founded the Society of Decorative Art in New York. Served as the interior decorator of the Woman's Building at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Often credited as the mother of interior design.
