U.S. Congressman. Moving to Indiana, he was employed as an assistant engineer on the White River Canal, (1833-40). He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced o practice law in Brookville, Indiana. He was secretary of the Indiana State Senate, (1842-43) and chief clerk of the Indiana State House of Representatives, in 1844. During the Civil War, he served as Captain in the 19th Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress, serving (1865-67). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in banking and was appointed Indiana Secretary of State by Governor Conrad Baker, serving until his death at age 54.
