U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Harvard University in 1886, commenced in the manufacture of glass and was president of the Corning Glass Works, (1902-10). In 1919, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-sixth and Sixty-seventh Congresses, serving until his resignation in 1922. He was appointed by President Harding, as U.S. Ambassador to Germany, serving (1922-29) and appointed by President Coolidge as U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain, serving (1925-29). An unsuccessful candidate for election to the U.S. Senate, he returned to managing the Corning Glass Works and was Chairman of Advanced Study at Princeton University, until his death.
