Alexander Nelson Hathaway was born in Pope County, Ill., Oct 18, 1833. He
was married to Emily J. Jennings [note: dau of Elijah & Mary Jane Soward
Jennings] Nov 25, 1866. To this union were born three children, viz:
Mrs. Sarah Aud,
of Hartsville, Mrs. Ellen Wasson, of Oak and Mrs. Julia Gee, of Harrisburg.

Mr. & Mrs. Hathaway took into their family Jacob Shelby, an orphan, at the
age of two years and reared to manhood. He is married and lives at
Harrisburg.

Uncle Nelse, as he was known, had four brothers, John, William, Spencer and
Gordon, three of them, William, Gordon and Spencer with himself were union
soldiers, Gordon and Spencer lost their lives while in the army. His
brothers are
all dead. He has one living sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Partain, of Herod
Springs
and one sister dead, Mrs. Nelson Conley.

He professed a hope in Christ and united with the Regular Baptist Church at
Old Grandpier in November 1880. He was a firm believer in salvation by the
grace of God and frequently talked in church meetings.

He died March 14, 1917, aged 83 years, 4months and 26 days. He was
buried in
Old Grandpier cemetery the 15th inst. A large number of his friends turned
out to pay their respects to their departed friend and neighbor.

He leaves a companion, three children, one sister and a host of other
relatives and friends to mourn his departure. The companion has lost an
affectionate
husband, the children a kind father, the church a true Christian and the
community a good citizen, but we are sure that our loss is his gain. A
Friend
