Vaughn Mulkey, Noted Mattress Maker, Dies
Vaughn D. Mulkey, who built a small, one room mattress company into a half-block long furniture manufacturing business in what was once a famous Oakland social center, died last night at the age of 86.
Mr. Mulkey had been in ill health for the past two-and-a-half-years and succumbed in an Oakland hospital after a stay of several days.
A native of Kansas, Mr. Mulkey came to Oakland in 1919 where he established a mattress manufacturing business in a small 16-foot frontage section of the old Washington Hall at 607 E. 12th St., at that time one of Oakland's best known social centers.
The small mattress plant was dimly lighted by gas jets, but that didn't stop the flow of "Mulkey mattresses" which people from all over Northern California came to know. Many of Mr. Mulkey's customers suggested he branch out into other furniture and so the Mulkey Furniture and Mattress Co. Came into being, spreading from room to room of the historic social hall.
Mr. Mulkey hung his display of carpets where once the great curtains swung over the proscenium, and rooms backstage that once housed stars of many a grand production were filled with period furnishings. The balcony overlooking the great dance floor was a showroom for breakfast ets and other items.
In 1957 Mr. Mulkey celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife, Bertha, who died several years ago. They had no children.
Mr. Mulkey was a member of the Retail Furniture Association and the Oakland Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trueman's Funeral Chapel, 2935 Telegraph Ave.
