Eliza married Ephraim Dickson Hayes 11 Sep 1843 in McDonough County, Illinois. Due to the Civil War, and the family trying to stay out of it, they headed towards Texas looking for work. Upon trying to get back to Illinois, Ephraim traveled with some of the children by wagon, and he put Eliza and the two youngest children on a train. Eliza was too frail to travel as she was pregnant with their tenth child. The train put Eliza and her two small children off the train, as she was sick and they would not let her travel on their train. She died during childbirth in Wataga, Knox, Illinois, and the baby died too. Ephraim farmed the younger children out with family or friends. He married Mahala Jane Eastlick 30 Dec 1864 in Bureau County, Illinois. Nine more children were born from this marriage.

I have Ephraim and Eliza's marriage record from the Illinois State Archives. Many variations of Eliza's name have appeared in genealogy trees. I used the name on the marriage document itself, and her approximate age and place of birth from the 1850 and 1860 Census in Illinois and Missouri where she appears with Ephraim and her children.
