Passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011 at Tendercare in Cass City, at the age of 94. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20 at Fostoria United Methodist Church in Fostoria, with Pastor Kay Leitelt officiating. The family will receive visitors 2-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19 at Avram Funeral Home in Mayville and 10 a.m. until time of the service Tuesday at the church. Interment will take place at Watertown Township Cemetery with military honors being conducted by Mayville American Legion Post #181 and Mayville/Vassar VFW Post #10884. John was born Jan. 31, 1917 in Richlands, VA to Alexander and Minnie (Oakes) Penland. He was a veteran of World War II. John married Dorothy Middleton Oct. 29, 1946 at Fostoria United Methodist Church. He retired from Chevrolet Motor Division in 1979. John loved spending time with his family and also enjoyed woodworking, making maple syrup, beekeeping and dogs. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Mayville; son, Kerry (Lori) of Mayville; daughter, Holli (Mark) Tompkins of Lake Orion; sister, Noel Jenkins of Virginia; four grandchildren, Reality Penland, Lacy (Terry) Mrock, Cory Tompkins, Kayla Tompkins and one great-grandson, Nathan Mrock. John was preceded in death by three sisters, Dora Brown, Lilly Ruble, Carrie Slaughter and three brothers, Palmer, Edgar and Clay Penland. Memorials may be made to Fostoria United Methodist Church.
