Richard "Ike" Nieman, 76, died Saturday evening at his home at 211 S. 18th St. following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Sawin-Dyer Chapel with the Rev. Robert Ziegler, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Nortonville Cemetery. Family visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Sawin-Dyer Chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Atchison Hospice Program or the American Cancer Society and they can be left at the mortuary. Pallbearers will be Alvin Norton, Ted Otte, Ernest Steuart, Carl Tull, Leonard Moore Sr. and Floyd Simpson.

Mr. Nieman was born April 8, 1908 at Nortonville, the son of Fredrick and Mary Heim Nieman. He attended the Washington School at Cummings.

He and Cleone Shasteen were married March 3, 1932 at Effingham. She survives of the home.

The couple resided at Nortonville, Muscotah and Effingham where he was employed by various farms. They moved in 1951 to Atchison where they had made their home since.

While in Atchison, Mr. Nieman was employed at Manglesdorf Seed Company and Rockwell International until he retired in 1973.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Atchison.

Besided his wife, Mr. Nieman is survived by four sons, Loren Nieman, Climax Springs, Mo., Howard Nieman, and Keith Nieman, Atchison, and Burton Nieman, Littleton, Colo.; one daughter Kay Norton, Atchison; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of step-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Vera Sinclair, Effingham and Mrs. Reva Weidinger, Basehor. He was preceded in death by both parents and one brother, Lloyd Nieman.
