Fred Bryant Austin, 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 14, 2011.

Fred was born February 26, 1928 to Fred T. Austin and Leola Spencer Austin in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Fred was a hard worker and taught his children a good work ethic. He began working at the age of thirteen during the Great Depression. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for forty-two years as office machine repairman covering the western United States for the railroad.

On November 10, 1945 Fred married the love of his life, Olive Catherine Defa. Together they raised five children, thirteen grandchildren, and forty-three great-grandchildren.

During Fred's early adult life he was an outfitter/guide for Defa's Dude Ranch. He enjoyed bowling and golf. During their retirement Fred and Olive were "snowbirders" to Apache Junction, Arizona. They had many wonderful friends during their travel years. Fred organized and ran the golf league for Gold Canyon Resort.

Preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Leola Austin, in-laws; Marion and Lucia Defa. Brothers Morgan and Kenneth. Survived by his wife of sixty-five years Olive, children Fred (Peach) Austin, West Valley City, Utah; Valorie (Rulon) Crandall, Murray, Utah; Kathleen (Darrell) Brotherson, Ferron, Utah; Sherri (Michael) Steele, Sandy, Utah; Terri (Donald) Bennett, Orangeville, Utah; thirteen grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren. Siblings Bonnie (Jack) Christensen, Salt Lake City, Utah; Don (Brett) Austin, Salt Lake City, Utah.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2011 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Peel Funeral Home, 8525 West 2700 South.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Valley View Memorial Park, 4400 West 4100 South.
