ROCK SPRINGS - Memorial services for Dr. Governor George Hamm, 83, will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 28, 2007 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church with Fr. Killian Muli will officiate. Inurnment will be in the St. Joseph's section of the Rock Springs Municipal Cemetery. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.

He died, surrounded by his family, on Feb. 24, 2007.

He was born July 17, 1923, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Helen Weir Young and Charles Francis Hamm. After the death of his father, the family moved to Green River where he attended grade school, junior high and graduated from Green River High School in 1942. While attending school, he was president of his junior and senior class. He was very active in all sports, achieving first team district basketball.

After graduation, he attended the University of Wyoming. While there, he participated in football and track.

In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the LSMR 516 where he attained the rank of Ensign. After the war, he returned to the University of Wyoming where he graduated in 1947 with bachelor of science degrees in zoology and chemistry. He later attended the Los Angeles College of Optometry where he graduated with honors as a Doctor of Optometry in 1952.

Returning to Rock Springs, he practiced Optometry until his retirement in 1980.

In 1949, he married Sheila McGarvey of Rock Springs, where they resided and raised their family. His proudest accomplishment was serving as chairman of the recreation board. Through their efforts, the Paul J. Wataha Recreation Complex was designed and completed. He was also instrumental in designating the site locations for Western Wyoming Community College and the Sweetwater County Memorial Hospital.

He was an avid golfer, bridge player and enjoyed traveling, skiing, drawing and helping his children in their endeavors.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda Shuley and husband and sons, Paul Hamm and Erik Hamm, all of Rock Springs; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and dear friend, Alberta Mahoney of Kansas City, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, brothers Kenneth, Don, and Glen; sister, Helen "Polly" Johnson and a grandson.

The family will receive family and friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Allen Shuley, 1005 Peachwood, Rock Springs.
