Harry Reid Battle Creek It is with great sadness that the family of Harry Reid age 82, announces the passing of our dear father, brother, grandfather and friend on Sunday afternoon. He passed with his family by his side at the Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek, MI. He was born September 27, 1928 in Saginaw, MI the son of Alfred Reid and Mary (McCloy) Reid. Harry had worked for 40 years as an elevator mechanic, retiring in 1991 from Post Cereal plant. He had served his country in the U S Army from 1948 until 1951 as a clerk general during the Korean Conflict being honorably discharged from Fort Bliss, TX on September 19, 1951. Harry graduated from Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, MI. He came to Battle Creek from Detroit in 1960. Harry had been very active in the local Boy Scouts of America particularly as a troop Committeeman and Scoutmaster with the Level Park Troop 320. He received the Order of the Arrow Honor in 1970, the Woodbadge recognition in 1968, he received the Silver Beaver award in 1975; he had been a trainer of adult leaders for many years through the Boy Scouts, and he was a merit badge counselor for hiking, camping, cooking, marksmanship and others. He had also been involved with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts for over 30 years, the American Red Cross, a member of the Post 25 Year Club, the Post Employees Balloon Club, a life member of the National Rifle Association, life member of the American Legion Post 298, the A.A.R.P., the Battle Creek Y Center and Burnham Brook Center. Harry had volunteered with the disaster relief team of the American Red Cross for many natural disasters and recently for Hurricane Floyd in North Carolina in 2000. He had volunteered for 3 years with the grounds crew at the Fort Custer National Cemetery. He was a stable and gentle man to help guide and counsel people and families with the Good Samaritan Hospice since 1998. Harry's hobbies included: When he was younger he would go hunting and fishing, being in the out-of-doors camping and hiking. Recently he enjoyed photography, doing lots of walking on the linear park while enjoying the out-of- doors and he liked quiet times to read. Harry was a kind man with a huge, shy smile with those twinkling eyes you knew you had met a gentle man with lots of caring for human kind. He married the former Katherine Cosgrove in Saginaw, MI on July 10, 1954; however she passed away in August 9, 1998. Surviving family include: a son: Thomas A. Reid of Battle Creek, MI; a daughter: Karen H. R. Evans of Battle Creek, MI; five grandchildren: Derrick Evans, Kenneth Evans, Bethany and Doug Stewart, Laurie Gibbs, and Christopher Reid; and two great granddaughters: Melissa and Samatha Stewart; two brothers - Sam Reid of Saginaw, MI; Chuck and Mary Lou Reid of Freeland, MI; two sisters: Mary Young of Saginaw, MI and Barbara and Ron Wilbur of Beaverton, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife: Kay Reid. Visitation will be held at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service after 9 a.m. Thursday (September 15, 2011); the family will receive friends from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 16, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in the Bachman Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dr. Kingery Clingenpeel of First Christian Church officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI. Memorial tributes may be made to: the American Red Cross or Boy Scouts of America with a designation for Nottawa Trails Campership Fund, envelopes available at the funeral home.
