Personal Comment:
I personally knew Maury in a way few others did .. the person God created him to be in spirit and what a spirit he was .. a special human being. I found this photo of the moon on line. This photo was actually taken on July 31, 2004 on the day Maury left us .. A "Blue Moon" and the Astronomy Photo of The Day. Credit & Copright: Vic Winter (ICSTARS)

Maury Barlow Pepin
DUNCANVILLE, Texas - Maury Barlow Pepin, 54, a former resident of Lake Helen and Deltona, died of peritonitis July 31, 2004, at his home. A memorial service for him was held Aug. 6 in Dallas.

Mr. Pepin was an author. He recently finished writing a book called Care of Astronomical Telescopes and Accessories, which is scheduled for publication in October by Springer-Verlag London. Born in Pasadena, Calif., he moved from Massachusetts to West Volusia in 1979, and from West Volusia to Boston in the early 1990s.

An avid amateur astronomer and gifted writer, he was a former associate editor at Sky & Telescope magazine in Cambridge, Mass.

While he lived in West Volusia, Mr. Pepin owned an art-restoration business called Graphic Conservation. He also was a curator for the DeLand Museum of Art, where he taught art classes each summer for many years.

He served on the Volusia County Democratic Executive Committee in the early 1980s.

Mr. Pepin had a calendar on his desktop of all the blue moons for the next few decades. A friend of his was thinking of him and took a beautiful photograph for him of the blue moon July 31, the day Mr. Pepin died. It is a lovely picture memorial.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Dirkx Pepin; two daughters, Danielle Pepin of Deltona and Jeannette Pepin of DeLand; two sisters, Elizabeth Dermenstein of Lynnwood, Wash., and Kathryn Bledsoe of Edmonds, Wash.; three stepchildren, two stepgrandsons and a loving host of other family and friends.

Memorial donations may be made, to help cover costs of Mr. Pepin's untimely death, to his wife, Mary Dirkx Pepin, 610 E. Fairmeadows Drive, Duncanville TX 75116.
