*NOTE: It is not known for sure where Hyrum is buried...if at all. The history below states "got lost and drowned". The question is if he was swept away and never found or if his body was recovered. The truth of the matter is Winter Quarters was where the family was living at the time, so Winter Quarters cemetery is the place that represents Hyrum's death and burial.

From a family history written about Hyrum's brother John Lowry Jr. It states: "The Lowry family traveled on to the Missouri River, arriving there after the Mormon Batalion had been mustered out at Council Bluffs. They crossed the river to the west side at Winter Quarters and hastily built a house for the family and corrals for the cattle and prepared to stay there during the winter. Hearing of a place some distance up the river called Rush Valley, where there was good feed for stock, Grandfather (John Lowry Sr.) took a herd of cattle up there to care for them during the winter; he also took father (John Lowry Jr.) and one other son to assist in the work, leaving Hyrum to assist the family at home...When grandfather and his two sons returned in the spring of 1847, they learned at that time that Hyrum, had attempted to cross the Missouri River to visit his Grandmother; he got lost and drowned..."
