Mrs. Esther J. Smith
Pulaski lost one of its best beloved residents Thursday, February 15, at 1:30 p.m., when the Grim Reaper stepped in and took Mrs. Esther J. Smith to her heavenly reward after 85 years of service on this earth.
She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Black, after a long illness. Her husband, James W. Smith, preceded her in death in 1922, also a daughter, Mrs. U.Z. Sweezy, five years ago.
Mrs. Smith was born in Meadville, February 27, 1849, the daughter of Jacob and Olive Custer Clark, and had lived practically all her life at Pulaski. She was a member of the Pulaski Methodist church and took an active interest in all branches of church work. She had been a member of the church sixty-eight years.
She is survived by four children: Prof. Edward L. Smith, Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. James Black, Pulaski; Samuel Smith, Hillsville, and Mrs. James A. Shannon, Erie; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the residence of Mrs. James Black, Pulaski, and interment will be made in the Pulaski cemetery.
