Provost of Trinity College Dublin, 1952-1974.

Son of Joseph McConnell and Annie Corr McConnell, of Ballymena, Co. Antrim.
Professor of Mathematics, Trinity College.

He was a Presbyterian, and the first non-Anglican Provost of Trinity College, and his election was seen as a revolt by the younger members of the staff against the "ancien regime". He was a close personal friend of Eamon De Valera, sharing their interest in Mathematics.

He was appointed to be a member of the Irish Council of State by President Eamon De Valera in 1973, and re-appointed successively by Presidents Childers, O'Dalaigh, and Hillery, his term concluding on 2 December 1983.
