Daughter of Lilly Lee Gibson and Edward Lillington Lyon. Her maternal grandparents were Anna Peter Hanner and Jeptha Dawkins Gibson. Paternal grandparents were Fannie Maittanie Small and the Rev. James Thomas Lyon.

After her mother's death in 1917, Annie went to live with her mother's brother, Robert H. Gibson, and his wife, Mary McLeod, in Ellerbe, Richmond County NC. Robert was Postmaster of the Mineral Springs district. Her siblings lived with other extended family.

In 1925, Annie began training as a Registered Nurse at Anson Sanitorium Training School for Nurses in Wadesboro, Anson County NC. She graduated the 3-year program in 1928 and received her nurse's license on April 23, 1929 (NC RN License #10051).

In 1929, Annie married Joseph Rufus Meachum from Anson County. They lived in Wadesboro. Rufus owned a furniture store. In addition to working as a Registered Nurse, she also was a saleslady at her husband's store.
