J Matthew Morrison, Old Citizen, Died Suddenly Today

For Half A Century, An Energetic Citizen Of Cape Girardeau – Native Of County

James Matthew Morrison, commonly called Colonel Matt Morrison died at 9:30 this morning from an apoplectic stroke. While he complained of illness earlier in the morning, his death was sudden and unexpected.

Yesterday he was about town with his usual energy and apparently as vigorous as ever so that the report of his death this morning was hard to believe by those who knew him and who had seen him yesterday.

He was a native of Cape Girardeau County, having been born on a farm near Oak Ridge 70 years ago. He came to Cape Girardeau in 1867 and secured work with Peter Held in driving a mail and passenger hack from Cape Girardeau to Allenville to make connections with the Iron Mountain railroad trains, this being the only railway line in Southeast Missouri at the time

In a short while, Morrison had earned enough money to buy the business from Held and continued to it until he opened up a livery stable business in Cape Girardeau.

In the days of his hack driving the road to Allenville was a toll road as far as Dutchtown, and considerable business was done over it.

He was married three times, his first wife being Miss Ida Cruchon. To them were born five children, four of them still living: Harry, a farmer a few miles west of Cape Girardeau; Fred who lives in Illinois; Mrs. Maggie Anderson, living in Texas; Mrs. Alma Price, living in Cape Girardeau.

His first wife died a number of years ago. He was divorced from his second wife, his third wife survives him.

Funeral arrangements will not be made until his absent children are heard from.

Matt Morrison was one of the best known men in Cape Girardeau and in his active life he accumulated considerable property, it being estimated that his estate will amount to about $50,000.

He was one of Cape Girardeau's unique characters, rugged in style, active, energetic, and persistent. He always used gruffness in manner that caused those who did not know him to think he was rougher than he really was. He had his good points, among them being his tirelessness in work, another his fearlessness of opposition and the determination to make his way in life's battle.

Twice, he was a member of the city council, the first time in the4 Eighties during the administration of Mayor L.J. Albert. Ten years ago when the Kage administration went into office, he was again a councilman from the Fourth ward.

He passed away at his home on Spanish street in the vicinity of where most of his activities have been carried on in his half century's residence in Cape Girardeau.

In this part of the city he formerly conducted his livery business.
