John Dillon, born in Greene Co., PA, was the 12th and youngest child of John Dillon and Rachel (Hamilton) Dillon. He resettled to Monroe Co., OH with his family about 1835. This family lived a few miles to the west of the present comunity of Lewisville. This family eventually resettled farther west in Noble Co.

About 1848, John married Malinda Wells.

On September 30, 1862, John Dillon was 'enrolled' as a private, Co. F, 116 Ohio Volumteers at Gallipolis, Gallia Co., OH. He listed his post office location as Stafford, Monroe Co., OH, at the time of his enlistment. While stationed at Martinsburg, VA, 'on or about September 15 1863, he contracted bronchitis from exposure.' He was hospitalized in the Regimental hopital in Martinsburg, VA, and eventually a general hospital in Frederick City, MD. He was honorably discharged as a corporal, Co. D, 62nd Ohio Infantry Volunteers in Richmond, VA, on June 17, 1865.

After the death of Malinda in 1872, he married Barbara Jane Lewis. After the Civil War he resettled for a while to Gallia Co., OH before moving on to Lincoln Co., WV, near W. Hamlin, where he died at the age of 91. He is buried in the Harvey's Creek Cemetery near W. Hamilin, next to his wife, Barbara Jane and son, John.
