Philosopher. Emmanuel Swedenborg was an influential Swedish scientist, philosopher, and mystic who advanced the idea that the Bible was the immediate and direct word of God. His writings inspired the Swedenborgian Church, founded in England after his death. Though he lived his life almost entirely in Sweden, he died on a visit to England and was buried there in St. George of the East Church in London. When Sweden requested his body in 1908, it was discovered that the head had been removed by an amateur phrenologist. The skull remains in private hands today.
