US Senator. After being admitted to the bar this Virginian moved to Savannah, Georgia, and began a successful law practice. Early in the Revolutionary War effort the young attorney volunteered his services, becoming a captain of the dragoons. He participated in the freeing of Savannah from British control and in driving the British from Georgia while serving under the command of General Anthony Wayne. He became a brigadier general in the state militia. In 1787 he was elected to the Continental Congress but did not serve. Two years later the Federalist was elected to represent Georgia in the US Senate serving two terms from 1789 to 1801. He returned to Georgia, moving to the capitol city of Louisville hoping to remain involved in state politics but he died just four months after leaving the Senate.
