August Friedrich Wilhelm Schrader and Katharina Maria Dorothea (Homann) Schrader ("Mary") had eight children; seven grew to adulthood. Their firstborn died aboard the ship on which they came to America in 1865 and is buried in New York. The Schraders arrived at Castle Garden at the southernmost tip of Manhattan, the first formal receiving station for immigrants.
With the exception of the child that died, all offspring were born in Clayton County, Iowa. Pregnant during her voyage to the U. S., "Mary" gave birth to Sophia Maria, also called "Mary," near Guttenberg in Garnavillo Township on November 15, 1865. She is the only Schrader child baptized at St. John American Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. Her six younger siblings, born in Garnavillo and Wagner townships, were baptized at St. Paul Lutheran, Garnavillo and Zion Lutheran, Clayton Center.

They remained there for about six years, until 1871. Thereafter, they lived and farmed in Wagner Township. August Schrader, naturalized on January 19, 1876, died in 1897, Mary in 1906. They are buried beside a SCHRADER monument at Eno Cemetery, Wagner Township--"Mother" on one side, "Father" on the other. Six of their seven adult children are buried in three other Clayton County cemeteries: St. Paul Lutheran, Monona; St. John Lutheran, Luana; and Gooding, Wagner Township. Only their eldest child, daughter Sophia "Mary," is in Eno Cemetery, too--up a hill from the Schrader monument where a Johanningmeier gravestone marks her burial site with husband Charles and three Johanningmeier females who died in infancy: Elen, Emma and Ann(e).
